The BAA is truly a unique environment where arts and academics are intertwined, and we have worked to design a facility that supports their process and expresses their values.
The state of the current facility, which was originally constructed in the s as a post office warehouse, limited the school's ability to carry out its unique arts and academic program and serve as the only audition-based arts high school in BPS.
A year-long feasibility study, undertaken by Perkins Eastman and Wilson Butler Architects, determined that the school needed to enhance and improve learning spaces, studios, and performance venues to better support the transition from arts student to artist.
Situated on a prominent corner across from historic Fenway Park, the new building has been designed as a beacon for the neighborhood—to communicate to passersby its importance as a learning community.
This is expressed at the exterior through a series of projecting glass bay windows that showcase the activity occurring within and keep occupants constantly connected to the Peachtree healthcare paper fabric.
The building also includes rooftop outdoor learning and performance space. The facility will also include a gym and a health and wellness center for students. The expansion of the building, from approximatelysf tosf, will allow Boston Arts Academy to increase its capacity. The building has been designed with a range of features that are proven to improve indoor environmental quality IEQwith a focus on improved daylight, thermal comfort, acoustics, and reduced CO2 levels to improve cognitive function.
The project team includes Lee Kennedy as the construction manager. The five-storysf school will serve approximately 1, students in pre-K through 8th grade.
It will be complete in time for the school year. By creating a civic presence along Dinsmore Place and opening the campus up to the community along Atlantic Avenue through the play yard and the light-filled cafeteria and gymnasium just beyond, the school will help breathe new life into the neighborhood.
The siting establishes an important street edge along the busy thoroughfare of Atlantic Avenue in particular. Therefore, the exterior design was developed to function compositionally at different scales, providing a sense of scale appropriate to pedestrians and passing traffic.
The school will include state-of-the-art science labs, music and art spaces, and a 1, sf greenhouse on the roof. Martin Luther King, Jr. Bold child-friendly graphics throughout the building explain these systems and processes. We commend Cambridge Public Schools, Perkins Eastman, and all of their partners for bringing this healthy, inspiring learning environment to students and delivering a school the students, parents, and teachers can be proud of.

His experience in global healthcare design will be central to the continued evolution of our international portfolio and presence.
Specifically, his comprehensive understanding of healthcare in different markets, including those in which Perkins Eastman currently has a presence, will be invaluable to our clients, staff, and the communities in which we work. The goal of the study was to examine whether the adaptive reuse and conversion of commercial properties for educational use provide a solution that educators need and ignite a broader remedy for the rapid obsolescence and creeping blight of the separated-use commercial landscape.
While adaptive reuse of commercial buildings is far from novel, the strategy is becoming a more established option for educational program space. As a result, the authors posit, there is greater diversity in the scholastic environment and an expanding realm of possibilities.
Citing shifting community and economic conditions, the authors demonstrate through a series of case studies that adaptive reuse of commercial properties in particular is a viable strategy to achieve state-of-the-art educational facilities that are cost-effective, responsive to changing pedagogies, environmentally responsible, and also reflect shifting lifestyle preferences of young families.
Together, the case studies demonstrate the rich possibility embodied within these existing assets and suggest that commercial reuse is not a compromised solution but rather a beneficial, and potentially transformational, development scenario that can positively impact local development.
How Playful Environments Contribute to Innovation. Innovation as an end-goal in and of itself can be difficult to grasp, especially when what constitutes innovation are ideas and actions and advancements that have yet to be conceived.
